Iteration 41: 04 March - 24 March

BB Theme on the Horizon

This release introduces a new theme in Figma, expands all design templates to support light and dark mode, and improves flexibility in layout composition with the new Figma Slot component. In addition, the UI Icon Set has been updated and guidance has been added to clarify the usage of sd-brandshape. On the development side, small fixes help improve stability, and Multi‑Theming QA refinements are almost live, ensuring consistent theme behavior across components and closer alignment between development and design.

BB Theme takes shape

A new BB Theme is being introduced in Figma. The theme will be implemented in code in the next iteration. In parallel, design refinements will continue, with the goal of publishing a finalized version in Figma by the end of the next iteration.

Restricting Brandshape to UI themes

The sd-brandshape component is now clearly positioned as a brand-specific element, intended exclusively for use within the UI Light and UI Dark themes. To reinforce this:

  • The component will no longer be exposed in documentation and design libraries in both Storybook and Figma.
  • An informational note has been added in Figma documentation and component descriptions to clarify when and how it should be used

Development-side enforcement will follow in a future iteration.

Design Templates expanded to Dark Mode

All design templates in Figma documentation are now available in both Light and Dark modes, with improved theming support. A total of 50 templates have been updated, each now including multiple examples to better illustrate usage.

Small fixes and improvements on Dev

This release brings new features and refinements across components and theming. sd-combobox improved keyboard usability, sd-datepicker supports the view-month attribute which allows setting the initial month when opening the calendar view, and sd-step-group now allows manual control. Theming guidance is improved with updated fonts documentation, and new examples are available.

Under the hood, small fixes enhance visual consistency, theme stability, and defaults, reducing styling edge cases and improving rendering. sd-tag now supports slotted icons, and a new header template is available in Figma.

Multi‑Theming QA Improvements

The QA for Multi-Theming is almost live. These improvements will bring development and design into closer alignment, resulting in more consistent theme behaviour and increased reliability across components.

UI Icon Set: Update published

The UI Icon Set has been refreshed and published in Figma, now including 16 new icons and one updated icon. This update ensures alignment with the latest assets from Celum and keeps design and development fully in sync.

Helper Component Update - Introducing Figma Slots

We’re introducing a new Helper Component with Figma Slots to give designers greater flexibility when working within our design system.

What’s new:
The new slot capability allows you to:

  • Add, remove, and rearrange elements more freely within a component
  • Customize content structure without detaching or breaking the component
  • Work more efficiently with adaptable layouts

Why a helper component:
To ensure existing designs remain stable, we are providing slots through a new helper component rather than updating existing components directly. This prevents unintended layout shifts or breaking changes in current files.

What’s next:
Over time, we plan to integrate slots into core components by introducing nested slots.
These future updates may introduce breaking changes, as component structures evolve.

What you should do:

  • Use the new helper component for flexible compositions starting now
  • Avoid relying on internal structure of existing components where possible
  • Stay tuned for upcoming migration guidance as slots are rolled out more broadly.

This approach lets you benefit from increased flexibility today, while giving us a safe path to evolve the system tomorrow.

What’s Next?

In the upcoming iterations, we’ll continue refining and expanding the system. Brandshape updates are expected on the development side, while BB Bank will receive design refinements and move into development once the QA improvements for Multi-Theming are fully rolled out.

As part of the Multi-Theming QA initiative, we are also preparing future breaking changes. We recommend reviewing the documentation and starting to align with the updated approach. More details will be shared in a Teams post.

We’re also updating the sd-step and sd-step-group components, and a new sd-file-selector component is coming soon - stay tuned.
